Shalom to all BBS' lovers –
I have in front of me the letters of Shoshanah, Luka, Carol' Yehuda
and Lanie. Some other may be on their way.
You are all right by realizing that the first and most difficult
problem which this story (the only story in the Haggadah!) poses is
the understating of the word MESUBIN. Does the story have anything to
do with Passover? Or were people reclining (=mesubin) on other nights
as well? Look at the MA NiSHTANA piece and fine the answer! The
different translations have different understanding of this issue. It
is not difficult to guess with whom I side/
The term OTO HALAYLA is difficult as well. Does it imply a certain,
well known, night or just any night? What do you know about the term
OTO HALAYLA?
Yehudah supplied us with the biographies of the sages that are
mentioned in the story. Well done! But I have another question
regarding the mentioning of Bene B'rak. Is it intentional or
coincidental? What can we learn from the fact that the story takes
place in this city? And what about the order of the names of the
rabbis? Coincidental?
Other questions: (1)Why aren’t the students participating in the
discussion? (2) How come the rabbis did not realize that the sun had
already came out? (3) What is the last hour of the day in which it is
(or was) still permissible to recite the Shma'?
There is no doubt that the story comes to illustrates the idea that
KOL HAMRBEH (=the more you speak about the Exodus – the better!).
This statement is found in the Mishnah, and paradoxically it became
part of the Seder itself. We just obey this instruction by citing it!
Please send in your answers and further suggestions. I hope to be
able to respond on Tuesday which is Purim, but not in Jerusalem!
Happy Purim
avigdor
